Madurai Municipal Corporation is planning to set up a sewage treatment plant in Madurai. The project cost is estimated at ₹ 3.15 crore and will have a capacity to treat 2 million litres per day (MLD). The project will be funded through BPCL CSR initiative to the tune of ₹ 2.5 crore and the balance from internal revenues.
The corporation is in the process of preparing Detailed Project Report on operation and maintenance of the plant for the next five years .
