Ramco Cement is planning to modernize its captive power plant at Ariyalur cement works in Tamil Nadu. The existing 60 MW Captive Power Plant Boiler is a Conventional Rankine Steam Cycle Thermal Power Plant with single drum natural circulation, Fluidised Bed Combustion with under-bed fuel feeding system. The existing Plant has a single 40 MW and a single 20 MW Steam Turbine Units directly coupled to Electrical Generators. The total steam generation capacity of existing three Boilers (of 85 Tons per Hour, TPH each) is 255 TPH. The boiler is designed to use Imported coal. The boiler together with its associated auxiliaries would produce superheated steam at 89 kg/sq.cm and 515 deg C. The super heated steam would be taken to the steam turbine generator, air cooled condensers and associated auxiliaries so as to generate 60 MW electricity totally.
Also, the Boilers can be overloaded @ 7.5% so as to generate an additional steam @ 6.5 TPH per Boiler and total 19.5 TPH. Thus, the existing Boilers (of 3×85 TPH) can produce about 275 TPH steam for the power generation with the overloading. On actual operation, it I s found that the steam requirement for 60 MW power generation is only 249 TPH @ 4.15 TPH per MW. Thus, there is a surplus steam capacity of 26 TPH unutilized now. Thus, without adding any additional Boiler, the existing CPP can generate the required 66 MW.
The existing 60 MW CPP requires about 765 TPD of Imported Coal from Indonesia as fuel. The Gross Calorific Value (GCV) of the Imported Coal is 6300 Kcal/kg (max.). The proposed Augmentation of 6 MW additionally requires another 75 TPD coal. thermal power by adding only a 6 MW Turbine to it . Accordingly, it is proposed to augment the power generation by adding only 6 MW Turbine with Air-cooled condensers to enhance the power generation from 60 MW to 66 MW.
