Tamil Nadu government is planning to set up a solid waste management project for Greater Chennai Corp. An integrated planning is on the cards, to provide long term solution which is missing so far. Currently, the two dump yards in Kodungaiyur has around 12 million cubic metre of waste, dumped over a period of 30 years. Whilte, the Perungudi dumpyard, located on a 200-acre area and eight metre above mean sea level, has six million cubic metre of municipal solid waste.
The government is seeking a solution on public-private partnership basis for remedial measures like waste-to-energy plants.
