Tamil Nadu is the most industrialized state among southern India. It has strong presence in textiles, engineering and automotive industries.

It has also made a mark in bio technology and IT sectors. More than 3000 foreign JVs and 100% foreign subsidiaries including Ford, Hyundai, Saint Gobain, Motorola, Dell, Renault-Nissan, and Daimler, in addition to major local manufacturers like Ashok Leyland, TVS group, Titan, Murugappa group, cement companies etc., have manufacturing bases in Tamil Nadu with a Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) of over $ 10.0 billion.

The state has more than 97 industrial estate which promote industries. Some of the major industrial belts are textile clusters in Erode and Coimbatore, Leather clusters in and around Vaniyambadi, Vellore, Automobile cluster around Chennai, chemicals cluster around North Chennai and Cuddalore, paper and explosives cluster in Sivakasi, chemicals cluster in Tuticorin etc.
