Yercaud to develop waste to energy plant

Yercaud District Rural Development Agency is planning to develop a waste to heat energy plant in Yercaud in Salem district of Tamil Nadu. The plant will have the Nisargruna Biomethanation Technology of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and will produce organic manure, electricity and gas by using biodegradable and other wastes. The move will also dumping of waste into water bodies and prevent pollution. The implementation of the project has begun and is likely to go operational by end of March 2019.

The waste to energy plant will convert all types of organic waste which will be converted to biogas in 19 days. Currently, Yercaud generates 2 tonnes of bio waste every day which will be converted to 200 kg of organic manure. It will also result in power generation of 200 kw of electricity.
