Union government is setting up a new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Thoppur in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu. The project cost is estimated at ₹ 1,264 crore. The Union government has earmarked ₹ 5 crore for the initial works and the fund will be used to carry out the basic construction works of the hospital. As of November 2019, the project is in implementation and is likely to go operational by the year 2022.
